1. Wear Resistance
During the plastic molding processing in the die cavity, the die cavity both moves and slides, which causes a drastic friction between the surface of the die cavity and the material. Therefore, the wear resistance is one of the most fundamental and important properties of the die.
Hardness is the main factor affecting wear resistance. In general, the higher the hardness of the die parts, the smaller the wear amount, and the better the wear resistance. In addition, the wear resistance is also related to the variety, quantity, shape, size, and distribution of carbides in the material.
2. Strength and Toughness
Die Working conditions are often very bad, some often accept a larger impact load, resulting in a brittle fracture. In order to avoid the suddenly brittle fracture when working, die should meet high strength and toughness.
The toughness of tool steel mainly depends on the carbon content, grain size, and microstructure.
3. Fatigue Fracture Properties
In the process of die working, fatigue fracture often occurs under the long-term effect of Cyclic stress. The methods include repeated impact fatigue fracture, tensile fatigue fracture, contact fatigue fracture and bending fatigue fracture.
The fatigue fracture performance of the die depends on its strength, toughness, hardness, and inclusion percentage in the material.
4. High-temperature Performance
When the working temperature of the die is high, the hardness and strength will fall down, leading to early wear or plastic deformation of the die, and it fail. Therefore, the die steel should have high anti-tempering stability to ensure that the die with a higher hardness and strength at working temperature .
5. Resistance to Hot and Cold Fatigue
Some molds are repeatedly heated and cooled in the working process, which causes the cavity surface to be pulled after being stressed, it leads the surface to crack and spalling, increases the friction force, obstructs the plastic deformation and reduces the dimensional accuracy, which causes the mold to fail. Hot and cold fatigue is one of the main failure modes of hot working dies. Generally, this kind of dies should have a high cold and hot fatigue resistance.
6. Corrosion Resistance
Because of the presence of chlorine, fluorine and other elements in plastic, it will synthesis out of HCl, HF and other strong corrosive gas after heating, then it will corrode mold cavity surface, increase its surface roughness, increase wear failure.
